The institution of marriage is under attack. A number of states have amended their Constitutions to protect marriage between one man and one woman. Here in Indiana, the effort to protect the institution of marriage has temporarily stalled.
In order for the citizens of Indiana to be able to vote to protect marriage between one man and one woman as well as to ban same sex civil unions ordered by courts, two separately elected legislatures must pass a Constitutional Amendment. The legislature in 2005 passed Senate Joint Resolution 7 to ban same sex marriages and court ordered same sex civil unions. Unfortunately the House of Representatives, under the leadership of the Speaker of House Pat Bauer, did not hand down SJR 7 for a vote in 2007.
In order for the voters to be able to vote in November 2008 to protect marriage, the House and Senate must once again pass SJR 7. Marriage should be protected and your phone call, e-mail and letter to your Senator and Representatives urging them to support SJR 7 will be helpful.
