Advance America is continuing to lead the statewide effort to repeal property taxes. I am pleased that Governor Daniels has decided to get involved to help find a solution to the property tax crisis.

Governor Daniels supports a Constitutional Amendment as part of his plan. Unfortunately it is the wrong Constitutional Amendment.

Governor Daniels wants a Constitutional Amendment to cap property taxes for homeowners at 1%, rental property at 2% and businesses at 3%. Advance America supports a Constitutional Amendment to Repeal Property Taxes permanently.

The citizens of Indiana deserve the right to be able to vote to Repeal Property Taxes. Governor Daniels’ plan does not support giving the citizens the opportunity to vote to repeal property taxes. Since the government has no money to spend except the taxpayers’ money, the Governor should support letting the people vote to Repeal Property Taxes.

Repealing property taxes with a Constitutional Amendment is still the only way to let someone finally own their own home, farm or business. Under Governor Daniels’ plan, Hoosiers would still lose their home, farm or business if they can’t pay their property taxes.

Advance America has conducted 10 Property Tax Repeal Rallies around Indiana this year attended by thousands of Hoosier taxpayers. The next one is scheduled for South Bend on Friday, November 2nd. The message from the citizens at the Rallies and the thousands who have signed up to support our effort is clear – they want property taxes repealed and they want the right to be able to vote to Repeal Property Taxes.

Advance America has long supported the right of the citizens to approve local construction projects through a referendum. I’m glad the Governor supports this concept. For over a decade Advance America has been supporting controlling government spending. I’m glad Governor Daniels supports controlling local government spending. However, he should also support controlling state government spending.

Governor Daniels and I agree that there is a property tax crisis. However, the Governor and I disagree on the solution. I’m grateful that 43 Representatives and 18 Senators support the right of the people to be able to vote on a Constitutional Amendment to Repeal Property Taxes. A listing of the legislators is available at www.RepealPropertyTaxes.com. Hopefully the Governor will reconsider his position and stand with these Legislators and the majority of the citizens of Indiana. I look forward to working with Governor Daniels and the members of the House and Senate to let the citizens of Indiana be able to vote to permanently Repeal Property Taxes.
