Victory On SJR 7 Marriage Protection Amendment
On Thursday, January 24th at approximately 9:00 am the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Richard Bray (R-Martinsville), started the public hearing on Senate Joint Resolution 7, the Marriage Protection Amendment. Senator Bray permitted, as is the longstanding procedure and custom, the supporters of SJR 7 to testify in favor of the Resolution and then the opponents to testify in opposition to SJR 7. I was given the opportunity to testify in favor of SJR 7.

Committee Vote
Senator Bray then entertained a motion on SJR 7 and I am pleased to report SJR 7 passed the Judiciary Committee by a vote of 5-4. SJR 7 now goes to the full Senate where all 50 Senators will be given the right to debate, amend and vote on SJR 7 in a public setting. This is the way the legislative process is supposed to work. Senator Bray is to be commended for the professionalism he demonstrated as a Committee Chairman and the fairness he exhibited to the citizens of Indiana who came to the Committee to testify. Additionally Senator Hershman (R-Monticello) is to be commended for authoring SJR 7.Senators voting YES included: Senator Ron Alting , Senator Richard Bray, Senator Jeff Drozda, Senator Brent Steele, and Senator Joe Zakas – Senators voting NO included: Senator Jim Arnold, Senator John Broden, Senator Tim Lanane and Senator Samuel Smith.
