**Property Owners Are At Risk!**

The 2008 Indiana General Assembly will wrap up on March 14, 2008. The 150 Legislators continue to debate property taxes. Unfortunately It Appears Property Owners Will Once Again Lose! Here are just a few of the adverse consequences of Governor Daniels’ Plan:

  • 1% sales tax increase

  • Local option income tax increases in many counties

  • Doesn’t stop property tax increases

  • Doesn’t let Hoosiers vote to Repeal Property Taxes

  • Temporarily lowers property taxes while permanently raising sales taxes

  • Doesn’t let Hoosiers finally own their own home, farm and business  *If you can’t pay your property taxes the government will take your home, farm and business and sell it!

  • Does not control state spending

Don’t Be Fooled!
Don’t be fooled by the rhetoric! The Republican leadership of the Senate and the Democrat leadership of the House along with Governor Daniels did not support a fair, full and open debate on the floor of the House and Senate to Repeal Property Taxes! Now it appears their major goal is to put another band-aid on the property tax crisis in order to get re-elected.

Ft. Wayne Journal Gazette Editorial
An editorial in the Ft. Wayne Journal Gazette on Monday, March 3, 2008 is worth reading. Here is just a portion of the Editorial entitled “Shell Game”:

“What proponents are billing as property tax ‘reform’ is in fact a thinly veiled shift in the tax burden.”“Hoosiers may well conclude that home ownership is so important, and property taxes so onerous, that moving a tax burden from higher income homeowners to more middle-income and low-income homeowners and tenants is good public policy.”“But if Daniels and lawmakers say they have given Hoosiers overall a big tax break, don’t believe it.”

Be looking for future updates as the General Assembly moves toward its conclusion on March 14th.
