Every child in Indiana deserves the opportunity to get a first class education! Advance America will continue to support legislation that helps the children of Indiana!
Senate Bill 528 – A Good First Step!
Senator Carlin Yoder is the author of Senate Bill 528. SB 528 could help hundreds of families be able to choose the best school for their child. What would SB 528 do?
Scholarship Granting Organizations!
SB 528 would permit corporations and individuals to make a charitable contribution to qualified Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs). These SGOs would in turn provide scholarships to lower income Hoosier families for their children to attend the public or private school of their choice.
Tax Credits Available!
Individuals and corporations who contribute to an SGO would be able to deduct 50% of the amount of that donation from their state tax liability. This means an individual or corporation who contributes $5,000 would get a tax credit of $2,500. The bill has a $5 million cap on contributions for the year.
Additional Facts About SB 528:
- SGOs provide scholarships for income-eligible families to pay the cost of enrolling in a participating private school or for public school transfer fees.
- Participating schools must be accredited by the state or by a national or regional accreditation agency. They must also administer a national norm-referenced standardized test and/or the state’s ISTEP+ tests each year.
- SB 528 is similar to other programs in existence in Arizona, Florida, Rhode Island, Iowa and Pennsylvania.
