On Wednesday, March 18th at 8:30 am in Room 156 B at the State House the Public Policy Committee will hear Senate Bill 236. This is the feticide bill. The bill passed teh STate SEnate earlier by a vote of 40-9. Go to http://www.in.gov/legislative/bills/2009/PDF/Srollcal/0180.PDF.pdf to see how your Senator voted. Senate Bill 236, as reported by the Indianapolis Star “was inspired by the April 2008 shooting of an Indianapolis bank teller. Katherine Shuffield was five months pregnant when she was wounded in the abdomen during a robbery at a Huntington Bank branch on the city’s (Indianapolis) Far Eastside. She survived, but the twin girls she and her husband were expecting did not.”Senate Bill 236 would increase the penalty for feticide from a Class C felony to a Class B felony. This means if an individual murders or attempts to murder a pregnant woman thereby causing the death of her unborn baby, they could be sentenced to a prison term of six to 20 years. Current law just permits a sentence of two to eight years. What Can You Do?
