Hoosier voters went to the polls on Tuesday, May 4th to vote in Indiana’s Primary Election. In view of the troublesome times we are currently in, the 2010 Election is one of the most important elections in decades.

Here is some information on the Primary Election from various sources.

U.S. Senate Nomination!

There were five individuals running for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate.  This is an open Senate seat because U.S. Senator Evan Bayh chose not to run for re-election.  The five candidates and the approximate percentage of votes they got May 4th were:

Don Bates, Jr.
Richard Behney
Dan Coats
John Hostettler
Marlin Stutzman

On May 15th it is expected that Congressman Brad Ellsworth will be chosen by the Indiana Democratic State Party to be their nominee for the U.S. Senate race.

This U.S. Senate race has national implications because the next U.S. Senator from Indiana will help shape policy for Indiana and the rest of the country beginning in 2011.  This includes economic issues including tax increases, job creation and government spending; as well as moral issues including same sex marriage and abortion.  Remember that U.S. Senators also vote on lifetime appointments of judges to the federal courts including U.S. Supreme Court

Congressional Races!

Indiana has nine Congressional seats.  There are currently five Democrat Congressmen and four Republican Congressmen.  Here are some highlights:

1st DistrictIncumbent Democrat Pete Visclosky will face Republican Mark Leyva.

2nd DistrictIncumbent Democrat Joe Donnelly will face State Representative Jackie Walorski who is giving up her State Representative seat to run for the Congress. Representative Walorski won a four-way primary with 61% of the vote.

3rd DistrictIncumbent Republican Mark Souder won a spirited primary against three other Republicans.  His Democrat opponent will be Thomas Hayhurst who he defeated in 2006.

4th DistrictRepublican Steve Buyer chose to retire after serving 18 years.  Thirteen individuals filed to run in the Republican Primary.  Current Secretary of State Todd Rokita won with 42% of the vote.  His closest competitors for the nomination were State Senator Brandt Hershman and State Senator Mike Young.  Rokita will face Democrat David Sanders in November.

5th DistrictRepublican Congressman Dan Burton faced six other Republicans in his quest for a 15th term.  He won with 30% of the vote.  His closest competitors were former State Representative Luke Messer and former Marion County Coroner John McGoff.  Congressman Burton will face Democrat Tim Crawford in the fall.

6th DistrictRepublican Congressman Mike Pence did not have any primary opposition.  His Democrat opponent will be Barry Welsh.

7th DistrictIncumbent Democrat Congressman Andre Carson will face Republican Marvin Scott.  Scott won a three-way battle for the nomination.

8th DistrictIncumbent Congressman Brad Ellsworth is giving up his seat to run for the U.S. Senate seat held by Senator Evan Bayh.  Current State Representative Trent Van Haaften will be the Democrat nominee.  The winner of the Republican nomination is Larry Bucshon who defeated seven other challengers.  His closest competitor was Kristi Risk who lost by less than 2,000 votes.

9th DistrictIncumbent Democrat Baron Hill defeated four challengers to win the nomination.  He will face Republican Todd Young who defeated three other Republicans including former Congressman Mike Sodrel.  Travis Hankins finished second.
