On Thursday, February 10th opponents of HJR 6, the Marriage Amendment, attempted to waterdown the language. HJR 6 is authored by Representatives Eric Turner, Dave Cheatham, Steve Stemler and Wes Culver. HJR 6 would amend Indiana’s Constitution to protect marriage between one man and one woman by banning same sex marriages and same sex civil unions.
Representative Terri Austin offered an amendment to delete the language that would ban same sex civil unions. Same sex civil unions are virtually identical to marriage. Fortunately her amendment failed by a vote of 32-60.
Representative Eric Turner along with Representative Dave Cheatham and House Judiciary CHairman Ralph Foley did an excellent job of explaining to the Representatives why the language should not be amended.
HJR 6 will now be eligible for final passage in the House of Representatives on Monday, February 14th.
Please call or email you Representative and urge them to “Vote YES on HJR 6 to protect marriage in Indiana.”
