In 2011 Indiana passed the most expansive School Choice Legislation in the nation to help parents choose the best educational setting for their children. The 2013 General Assembly is now considering expanding the school choice legislation. HB 1003 has a number of provisions in it including:
- Permitting children of active duty personnel to be eligible for private school vouchers.
- Permitting the families of children with disabilities and foster children to be eligible for a private school voucher.
- The maximum voucher for a child in elementary school would move from $4,500 to $5,500 in 2013 and $6,500 in 2014.
- The bill would also make siblings of a child who is receiving a voucher to also be eligible for a voucher.
- The bill would also remove the requirement that a child first attend a public school for two semesters before being eligible for a private school voucher.
Advance America will continue to support efforts to expand Indiana’s school choice law so more children can attend the school their parents want them to attend.
