Legislators Want the Public to Weigh In!
Senate Bill 193 is designed to give the public the opportunity to offer their comments on Common Core.
Common Core represents an effort to establish a National Education Curriculum. Common Core is supported by the Obama Administration.
Andrea Neal, writing in the Indiana Policy Review raises some important issues surrounding Common Core and whether it is in the best interest of the children of Indiana.
Concerning the adoption in Indiana of Common Core, she points out that:
“There was no public discussion at the time. Since then, a host of experts have emerged to question their quality and effectiveness.”
She goes on to ask:
“Who’s running Indiana schools? Local elected boards and state policy makers? Or philanthropists, consultants, publishers and testing companies?”

Senator Scott Schneider wants the citizens of Indiana and elected officials to have the opportunity to learn more about Common Core and its impact on over one million Hoosier school children. Senator Schneider is the author of Senate Bill 193. Under the provisions of SB 193:
- Nine hearings would be held around the State on Common Core – one in each Congressional District – to give the public the opportunity to offer input on Common Core.
- The Office of Management and Budget will conduct a fiscal review of the projected cost to the state and local school corporations to implement Common Core.
- The State Board of Education after the nine hearings are held and after the fiscal analysis is done, will vote on whether or not to continue to implement Common Core.
The proposal by Senator Schneider is a reasonable one. It is wise to give the public the opportunity to weigh in on such an important topic as the education of over one million Hoosier students; and it is wise to have a fiscal analysis done to know what Common Core will cost the taxpayers and public schools.
Senate Bill 193 passed the State Senate by a vote of 38-11. Click Here to see how your Senator voted. http://www.in.gov/legislative/bills/2013/PDF/Srollcal/0169.PDF.pdf
Senate Bill 193 is now awaiting action in the House of Representatives. Please contact your Representative and ask them to “Vote YES on Senate Bill 193 to permit public input and a fiscal analysis of Common Core.”
