On Wednesday, March 20th, the Senate Education Committee heard several hours of testimony on House Bill 1003.
House Bill 1003 could be the most important bill in the 2013 General Assembly dealing with school choice. HB 1003 has already passed the Indiana House of Representatives.
On Wednesday, March 27th the Senate Education Committee will vote on House Bill 1003.
Here are some provisions of HB 1003:
- Permitting children of active duty or former military personnel to be eligible for private school vouchers.
- Permitting the families of children with disabilities and foster children to be eligible for a private school voucher.
- The maximum voucher for a child in elementary school would move from $4,500 to $5,000 in 2013 and $5,500 in 2014
- The bill would also make siblings of a child who is receiving a voucher to also be eligible for a voucher.
- The bill would also make kindergarten children eligible for a voucher if their family meets certain income requirements.
Advance America will continue to support efforts to expand Indiana’s school choice law so more children can attend the school their parents want them to attend.
