2015 will long be remembered as the year religious freedom was lost in Indiana!
Here’s how it happened in just one week:
Thursday, March 26, 2015 – In the morning!
Senate Bill 101, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, (RFRA) was signed into law. This was a good law for Indiana! Here are just three (3) things you need to know about SB 101:
- SB 101 is similar to RFRA laws in 30 other states and the federal RFRA law passed by Congress in 1993;
- SB 101 would help protect religious freedom for all Hoosiers; and
- SB 101 would help protect a religious baker, photographer or florist from being punished by the government if they refused to participate in a homosexual wedding ceremony.
Thursday, March 26, 2015 – Later that afternoon!
A massive misinformation campaign was launched against SB 101 shortly after it was signed into law. The biggest lie told about SB 101 was that SB 101 would permit a restaurant to refuse to serve a meal to a homosexual. This was not true!
Thursday, April 2, 2015 – Just one week later!
In response to the massive misinformation campaign against SB 101, the 2015 General Assembly passed Senate Bill 50. Senate Bill 50 was incorrectly portrayed as merely “clarifying” SB 101. Unfortunately, SB 50 drastically changed SB 101 and substantially damaged religious freedom in Indiana! Here are just two (2) examples of how SB 50 harmed religious freedom in Indiana:
- A religious baker, photographer or florist could now be punished by the government – including a criminal prosecution – if the business owner refused to participate in a homosexual wedding ceremony. This is not right!
- A religious business owner, could now be punished by the government – including a criminal prosecution – if the business owner (in an attempt to protect women and children) refuses to permit a man to use the women’s restroom or women’s shower area in a fitness facility. This is not right!
There’s Even More Harm According To Liberty Institute!
The prestigious Liberty Institute located in Plano, Texas, is “the largest law firm dedicated solely to preserving religious liberty in the United States.” Liberty Institute did a legal analysis of the impact of Senate Bill 50 on religious freedom in Indiana. Their analysis points out a number of areas where religious freedom was harmed in Indiana as a result of the passage of Senate Bill 50.
