Press Release – October 5, 2007
INDIANAPOLIS, IN –Advance America Founder, Eric Miller, a long time proponent of repealing property taxes by amending Indiana’s Constitution, today issued a statement responding to Governor Daniels’ announcement that he favored a Constitutional Amendment to address Indiana’s property tax crisis. Miller said, “I welcome the Governor’s acknowledgement that past efforts to solve the problem of high property taxes have not worked. This is a major assist in our efforts to finally, and conclusively, solve Indiana’s property tax crisis. We can’t keep doing what hasn’t worked before and expect it to work this time. However, the real question is what will his amendment do? As we have been saying across the State of Indiana, we must adopt an amendment to Permanently Repeal Property Taxes on our homes, farms and businesses.
“If the Governor favors a Constitutional Amendment to cap State spending at an annual percentage level, we could certainly support such an amendment. But that alone will not solve the problem, as it would only set into concrete a property tax system that is hopelessly broken. We need not only a cap on spending, but also a Constitutional repeal of the right to tax property in our State. It will take both to be successful. Anything less than a full repeal of the right of the government to tax property in Indiana just won’t work.”
“To date 43 State Representatives and 18 State Senators have joined our call and that of the citizens of Indiana to amend our Constitution to Permanently Repeal Property Taxes. With this recent announcement by the Governor, I anticipate having more legislators join our efforts to adopt an acceptable amendment in the 2008 session of the General Assembly, as the first step in the process. I look forward to working with Indiana’s legislators from both parties, and the Governor, to craft the language of an amendment that will get the job done, once and for all.”
